Research Notes:
LAST GORDON LAIRD OF ABERLOUR
A distillery was established close to the mansion house of Aberlour. The last laird hoped to solve financial problems with the help of this project, but without sufficient business acumen he failed.
His creditors took possession of the property and let it to John Grant. The latter carried it on successfully until the property was eventualy sold to Alexander Grant.
Alexander Grant had been born on the farm of Drumfurrich and was the son of George Grant and Janet Donaldson. He had been a servant at Elchies and had gone to Jamaica where he made his fortune, returning to buy up Aberlour, hoping to erect a splendid new mansion.
He died before his new building venture could be completed, and the new building and his whole estate passed, on his death, to the only daughter of Dr MacPherson of Garbity, Sandy's sister Annie's daughter, who took the name of Grant.
When she died the estate passed to a distant relative. Mr Findlay, proprietor of The Scotsman newspaper, purchased the estate and became the new Laird of Aberlour.
