Francis married Margaret DOUGLAS, daughter of David DOUGLAS of Cockburnspath, 7th Earl of Angus and Margaret HAMILTON.1 (Margaret DOUGLAS was born about 1553, died in 1640 1 and was buried in 1640 in Eckford, Roxburghshire, Scotland 1.)


  Marriage Notes:

"He (Francis Stewart) married, before 1 July 1592, Margaret Douglas, daughter of David, seventh Earl of Angus, relict of Sir Walter Scott of Buccleuch. On the fall of her husband she interceded for him on her knees before the King at the gate of Edinburgh Castle on 17 November 1592. Three days later a proclamation forbade any one to receive her. She was received into favour by the King in Glasgow, but on 3 December she was banished again until six days after she 'purchast ane letter of paice.' She died in 1640, at a great age, and was buried at Eckford. They had issue" (page 171)

"Margaret Douglas, daughter of David, seventh Earl of Angus .... survived him (Walter Scott), and married,secondly, Francis Stewart, Earl of Botliwell" (page 231)
