Elizabeth married Gilbert LAUDER of Balbardie, Bailie and Burgess of Edinburgh, son of Sir George LAUDER of Haltoun and Catherine SOMERVILLE.¹ (Gilbert LAUDER of Balbardie, Bailie and Burgess of Edinburgh was born about 1485 and died before 19 May 1550 ³.)

"Gilbert Lauder was made a Burgess of Edinburgh on 8th December 1500, in right of his unnamed wife[⁴Burgess Rolls: https://archive.org/details/scottishrecordso46scotuoft/scottishrecordso46scotuoft/page/298/mode/2up] [but almost certainly Elizabeth Hopper], indicating that her father had been a Burgess. Gilbert Lauder is recorded as a Bailie of Edinburgh on 15th November 1520 and 15th April 1521. In 1532-3 he was Dean of Guild; of the Council in 1534-5, and a 'Man of Good' on the council in 1536; again 'of the council' 16th April 1537 and 6th August 1539.

He held extensive lands in Kircudbrightshire.[⁵The Exchequer Rolls of Scotland edited by A.E.J.G.Mackay, M.A.,LL.D., vol. xiv, 1513-1522, Edinburgh, 1893, pps. 333, 373, 482, 484-5, and 510.] (His father Sir George Lauder, and George's brother Alexander, were senescallos, or stewards, of Kirkudbright, 'in their parts' in May 1501.) Gilbert was Custumar of the burgh of Kirkudbright 1523-5. In the archives is a Procuratory by Master David Lauder, vicar of Ersiltoune [Earlston], to Master Henry Lauder, Finlay Williamsoun [Williamson] and 'Sir' John Macke [Mackie], chaplain, to resign the two-merk[⁶ A merk equates to 13 shillings and four pence. This is the annual feu-duty.] land of Barlochane [in Kirkcudbrightshire] formerly occupied by [tenants] John Smytht [Smith] and William Norway, into the hands of William Levenax [Lennox] of Cally [superior], in favour of Gilbert Lauder, burgess of Edinburgh, and Elizabeth Hoppar [Hopper], his spouse. Witnesses: Adam Hoppar [Hopper] and Alexander Makneil [McNeill], notaries, William Lauder, Archibald Little, James Curle, sir Malcolm Mortimar and sir George Mydlar [Middler], chaplains, [another] William Lauder and James Aikman, dated 9th February 1517.[⁷National Records of Scotland, GD10/47.]"

"Gilbert Lauder's first wife[¹National Records of Scotland, GD10/47.], probably of the Hopper of Bourhouse family, near Dunbar, the superiority of which was held by the Lauder of The Bass family. The Hoppers were also Burgesses of Edinburgh and a Richard Hopper, Burgess of Edinburgh, owned a tenement on the north side of the High Street of Edinburgh circa 1500. In March 1515 an Adam Hopper was made a Burgess of Edinburgh[²Burgess Rolls: https://archive.org/details/scottishrecordso46scotuoft/scottishrecordso46scotuoft/page/260/mode/2up]; and in 1512 a Henry Hopper is noted elsewhere as a Burgess of Edinburgh. This is interesting because Elizabeth's son is named Henry, an unusual Christian name in the Lauder family. She is recorded as Gilbert Lauder's wife in a Procuratory dated 9 Feb 1517."
