"DAVID PITCAIRN, born 1672, son of James P., min. of Kettle ; educated at Univ. of St Andrews ; M.A. (30th Aug. 1693); ord. to Creich 27th Aug. 1695 ; for refusing to go to the North and supply vacant pulpits, he was suspended by Commission of Assembly, and the church declared vacant 15th Sept. 1700; app. chaplain to 26th Foot, and sentence of suspension taken off by Assembly 31st March 1705; called 23rd Dec. 1707; adm. 8th Jan. 1708; died Father of the Church 18th April 1757. He marr. 1st July 1708, Catherine (born 12th May 1682, died 3rd March 1758), daugh. of William Hamilton of Wishaw, and had issue - Henry, born 12th Sept. 1709; Margaret, born 24th Sept. 1710; William, M.D., President Royal College of Physicians, born 9th May 1712, died 23rd Nov. 1791; James, born 1713; Archibald, born 1714 ; Elizabeth, born 1715; David, born 1717; Jean, born 1718; Mary, born 1719 ; Charles ; John, major of Marines, fired first shot in American War, born 1722, killed at Bunker's Hill, 19th April 1775; Robert, born 1728 - Douglas's Baron., 479 ; Scots Peerage, ii., 51 ; Anderson's House of Hamilton ; Scots Mag., lxxxi. ; The Fife Pitcairns, 417.]"
