ELPHINSTONE, Isabella ^{1 2}

Isabella married Robert MAXWELL 6th of Calderwood, son of Sir Robert MAXWELL 5th of Calderwood and Sibella CARMICHAEL 'of Hyndford', before 25 February 1524(1525)(confirmation of land).¹ (Robert MAXWELL 6th of Calderwood was born about 1494 and died before 1 November 1532 ².)

  Marriage Notes:

"King James IV. made a gift to Jane Carmichael of the marriage of Robert Maxwell, son and heir of the late Robert Maxwell of Calderwood, dated 18th February 1511. [....] On the 25th February 1524, and 20th November 1526, Robert Maxwell and Isabella Elphinstone, his spouse, received confirmations in Parliament of certain lands in the lordship of Stewarton, as contained in charters by the King, dated 15th January 1524. And on the 15th August 1530, King James V. granted to Robert Maxwell of Calderwood and Isabella Elphinstone, his spouse, a charter of the lands of Chapeltoun, Bellingshaw, Drying, Miltoun of Crerauch, and others. Isabella Elphinstone was eldest daughter of Alexander, first Lord Elphinstone (see Note below), and relict of David Lindsay of Dunrod. Robert Maxwell, sixth of Calderwood, died in 1540, and his wife seems to have predeceased him, as no after notice of her is found amongst the family papers. They had two sons and one daughter."

Note:

If all that Scots Peerage says of Isabella Elphinstone (below) then she would have to be a sister of Alexander, Lord Elphinstone who did not marry until 1507. That is where Scots Peerage places her.




"Isabella or Elizabeth (Elphinstone), appointed nurse to Prince James, the eldest son of James IV., who died an infant, 27 February 1508. In recompence of her services she had a charter of the lands of Chapelton and others for life, 9 March 1507-8, and she had other grants later. She was married, first, as his second wife, to David Lindsay of Dunrod, who was dead before July 1578 (1508?, 1518?) ; secondly, to Peter Colquhoun, burgess of Glasgow ; and thirdly, probably in March 1523, to Robert Maxwell of Calderwood. She survived her husband, who was dead before 1 November 1532, where she is described as his relict. By her second husband she had a son Peter Colquhoun, against whom, along with his mother, an action was raised 29 November 1537. She was married, fourthly, before 5 February 1537-38, to David Stewart, brother of Andrew, Lord Avondale."
