In her death certificate of 1904, Janet Hay was recorded as 'married to Adam Hay retired crofter'. Her recorded age was 78 years. Her parents were deceased. The Register of Corrected Entries recorded that the Procurator Fiscal's Office in Aberdeen had concluded that the cause of janet's death was "Shock resulting from an accidental fall". There was no formal certification of the cause of Janet's death. However, in the Register of Corrected Entries is a report, dated 19 November 1904, resulting from a Recognition touching the death of Janet Farquharson or Hay carried out on the authority of the Procuarator Fiscal.. The information contained in the death certificate is repeated, Janet being called a retired farmer's wife, and noting Upperton as her usual residence as well as the place of her accidental fall. The cause of death is formulated in exactly the same terms as that contained in the death certificate.

William Hay, Janet's son, who was present where the death occurred, gave notice of his mother's death before the registrar, John Callam, at Glenbuchat on the 15 November 1904.
