This is particulary noiceable with The Thanage of Fermartyn which designs the Alexander Gordon who sold the estate in the eighteenth century as 11th of Pitlurg.

This comes as a result of designing John Gordon of Essie's son, also named John Gordon, the 1st of Pitlurg.

The Balbithan MS designs that John's son, married to a daughter of Alexander Forbes 2nd of Pitsligo, as 1st of Pitlurg.

The fact that succeeding lairds were named John may also have affected numbering in earlier times. ^{1 3}
