  Marriage Notes:

Patrick Maitland of Auchincrieff succeeded and is included with his brother James in a precept of favour in favour of their brother, Mr Robert Maitland, for a charter under the Great Seal for the lands of Athie dated 25 July 15662[2PS1/35/38]. He m. Christian Chalmer, who survived him and was executor to him, and d. in September 1576."

from The Red Book of Scotland

"He (Patrick Maitland) succeeded in 1563, and married a daughter of Chalmers of Strichen, but had no surviving issue. Regarding her there is the following notice: -

'November 9, 1587. Letters of horning at the instance of Mr. Walter Maitland, son to Robert Maitland of Auchincreiff, and executor dative, confirmed to him against Christian Chalmers, relict of the deceased Patrick Maitland of Auchincreiff, for part of the said estate of the said Robert Maitland, intromitted by her, which belonged to the said Mr. Walter2[2 Reg. of Hornings, Vol. III.].'

He was succeeded by his nephew, Robert Maitland of Pitrichie."

from The Thanage of Fermartyn

Note:

The
Red Book of Scotland differs markedly from The Thanage of Fermartyn in who succeeded Patrick Maitland, the former stating that Mr Robert Maitland was Patrick's son ("succeeded on his father's death in 1576"); the latter says, as quoted above, that Robert was Patrick's nephew.

The Red Book does state that Mr Robert Maitland was served heir to his uncle, also Mr Robert Maitland, in the lands of Auchzouche, in the barony of Fedderat, on 6 October 1584, so this may be the source of the confusion.

Walter Maitland was a grandson of James Maitland of Monlaty, Patrick Maitland's brother.
