User ID: E376. General Notes: "John Horn, the elder son of Mr James, appears to have been educated at King's College, Aberdeen, and was perhaps a candidate for laureation in 1681. He is invariably designated later, under the style of a graduate, as 'Mr John.' He afterwards studied at Leyden. He was admitted advocate 31st January, 1691. He was allowed by the Lyon King of Arms to discontinue the use of the arms matriculated by his father. and to substitute an entirely different coat. The new grant is recorded as follows, under date 1st December, 1725 : \emdash " Or, three hunting horns gules. Crest, two horns conjoined, parti per fess or and sable countercharged. Motto, Moneo et Munio. N.B. \emdash Second matriculation." 32 He added considerably to his estates, and obtained a Crown charter erecting the lands and barony of Pitmedden, and the lands of Ardoyn, Buchanstone, Old Rayne including the burgh (a burgh of barony), and Westhall, etc., into a free barony, to be called the barony of Horn. Sasine thereof was registered 17th October, 1728,33 and thenceforward he was styled "Of Horn." On 24th July, 1733, he entailed his estates on the issue of his then deceased daughter Anne. 34 He died in the end of May or beginning of Juune, John married Ann ARBUTHNOTT, daughter of Robert ARBUTHNOTT 2nd Viscount of Arbuthnott and Katharine GORDON, 20 and 25 November 1693(contract).1 2 3 (Ann ARBUTHNOTT was baptised on 9 January 1672 in Bervie parish, Kincardineshire, Scotland 5 and died in April 1742 3.) Marriage Notes: "Mr. John Horn married the Hon. Anne Arbuthnot, daughter of Robert, second Viscount Arbuthnot. He had a charter from James II. of the above-mentioned lands (Westhall, Ryehill, Pitmedden, Ardoyne, Old Rayne, Pitmachie, and others), with the barony of Horn, and had a daughter, an only child." |
