  • Born: About 1493 1
  • Died: About 1530 1

   User ID: K684.

  General Notes:

"His father died while James (Haliburton) was young. Following the death of William Haliburton, George Blair of Bendochy husband of Isabel Halyburton purchased the marriage of the heir who was still a minor for the sum of £100 Scots. On the death of his grandfather John Halyburton of Gask about 1511, James Halyburton became the laird of Gask and inherited the considerable estate in Angus, Perthshire and Inverness and Ross. James took sasine of the lands of Pitcur in the county of Forfar and lands of Drumblade in Aberdeenshire in 1511.[1 The exchequer rolls of Scotland Vol. XIII p.664]

On 12 May 1512 having resigned his lands into the kings hands, James Haliburton of Gask was granted in heritage by King James I (King James V?) his lands in the barony of Aird and sheriffdom of Inverness, and the lands of the two Erchlesses in the earldom of Ross. These lands were then erected into the free barony of Erchless, together with the lands of Wester Struy, Easter Struy, Cuilgearan, Easter Croicheal, Wester Croicheal, Wester Comar Kinbaddy, and Dalhenny, with the fishings and outsets of the same, lying in Strathglass, in the earldom of Ross, and in the sheriffdom of Inverness, which formerly belonged to James Haliburton in heritage, and which, after alienation by him, had now been redeemed.[2 Registrum magni sigilli regum Scotorum Vol. ii 3730] These lands had come down through his forbears from Elizabeth Bisset lady of Kiltarlity in the early 14th century."
