CRICHTON, Elizabeth 1

  • Born: About 1435
  • Marriage (1): OGSTON, Thomas of Kirklands of Fettercairn, Bailie of Lanark 1

   User ID: E846.

Elizabeth married Thomas OGSTON of Kirklands of Fettercairn, Bailie of Lanark, son of John OGSTON of that Ilk, 'Lord of the barony of Crags and Glenylefe', Bailie of Irvine and Unknown.1 (Thomas OGSTON of Kirklands of Fettercairn, Bailie of Lanark was born about 1430.)

  Marriage Notes:

"He (Thomas Ogston) possessed the lands of Newbiggin and the Kirkton Mill of Fettercairn, or at least one half of them, it does not clearly appear which. He also owned the lands of Tilquhilly and Mallemuk in Banchory Ternan, and left them to his younger coheiress Janet.

He appears to have been twice married, 1st, to Irvine, fourth daughter of Alexander Irvine of Drum, and, 2ndly,to Elizabeth Crechton, widow of Gifford of Sheriifhall, by whom he seems to have had no family. By his first wife he had two daughters, his co-heiresses, viz., 1st, , who died unmarried, and 2nd, Janet, who married David Douglas."

from Supplement to the Histoy of the Families of Ogston

Note:

This quotation represents the received view of the marriage and family arrangements of Thomas Ogston and of his daughters.

However it presents us with some difficulty regarding possible dates.

If Janet Ogston did marry in 1479 it is unlikely that her mother was a daughter of Alexander Irvine and his wife, surnamed Lindsay. The dates so late as to make it unrealistic. If the order of his wives is changed, then that might possibly solve the difficulty, though we have no evidence for this, and do not know who Elizabeth Crichton was.
