  General Notes:

"Thomas Ogstoun possessed the Kirklands of Fettercairn, c. 1470 : these lands were sold by Walter in 1615." (page 80)

from Supplement to the History of the Families of Ogston

Note:

Elsewhere in the text the year of death for Thomas appears in the genealogical table as 1469. The dates surrounding this man and his wives are extremely problematic, and it may be the familial relationships surrounding him are not sound either.

Thomas married Elizabeth CRICHTON.1 (Elizabeth CRICHTON was born about 1435.)

  Marriage Notes:

"He (Thomas Ogston) possessed the lands of Newbiggin and the Kirkton Mill of Fettercairn, or at least one half of them, it does not clearly appear which. He also owned the lands of Tilquhilly and Mallemuk in Banchory Ternan, and left them to his younger coheiress Janet.

He appears to have been twice married, 1st, to Irvine, fourth daughter of Alexander Irvine of Drum, and, 2ndly,to Elizabeth Crechton, widow of Gifford of Sheriifhall, by whom he seems to have had no family. By his first wife he had two daughters, his co-heiresses, viz., 1st, , who died unmarried, and 2nd, Janet, who married David Douglas."

from Supplement to the Histoy of the Families of Ogston

Note:

This quotation represents the received view of the marriage and family arrangements of Thomas Ogston and of his daughters.

However it presents us with some difficulty regarding possible dates.

If Janet Ogston did marry in 1479 it is unlikely that her mother was a daughter of Alexander Irvine and his wife, surnamed Lindsay. The dates so late as to make it unrealistic. If the order of his wives is changed, then that might possibly solve the difficulty, though we have no evidence for this, and do not know who Elizabeth Crichton was.

Thomas next married Daughter IRVINE, daughter of Alexander IRVINE 5th of Drum, Sheriff of Aberdeen and Daughter LINDSAY.1 2 (Daughter IRVINE was born about 1466.)

  Marriage Notes:

"By his (Alexander Irvine's) second wife, Lindesay, Alexander Irvine had eight daughters, viz. : - (1) Married to Coutts of Westercoul; (2) married to Chalmers of Strichen ; (3) married to Skene ; (4) married to Ogston of Fettercairn ; (5) married to Rose of Auchlossin ; (6) married to Crawford of Fornet ; (7) married to Duguid of Auchinhove; (8) married to Cummyn of Culter (?) or Barclay of Mathers (?) or booth."
