"His (John Maxwell's) wife Elizabeth, daughter of John, Lord Maxwell (sometime Earl of Morton), was excommunicated as a Papist by Mr. Melville, minister of Terregles, in 1628, but took no heed of this 'fearful sentence,' and remained 'proudlie and contempnandlie at the processe of excommunication.' By her, who was living, a good deal over threescore, in December 1639, Herries had issue"
