Agnes married John MAXWELL 4th Lord Herries of Terregles, jure uxoris, son of Robert MAXWELL 5th Lord Maxwell and Janet DOUGLAS, by 25 March 1548.¹ (John MAXWELL 4th Lord Herries of Terregles, jure uxoris was born about 1514 and died on 20 January 1583 ¹.)

  Marriage Notes:

"Arran kept faith with Maxwell, who had a grant of the marriage of Agnes Herries under the Privy Seal on the 18th, and a gift from John Hamilton of his rights thereto on the 19th, March 1547-48, and on March 29 Wharton reported to Protector Somerset that Maxwell had been with the Regent, and received in marriage Lord Herries's daughter, and that he had arrived at the house of Drumlanrig on March 25 'with his wife of 14 years of age.' A papal dispensation, 26 May 1555, giving them leave to remarry, and legitimising their issue, shows that Maxwell and his wife were related within the third degree of affinity."

"John, second son. As John, Lord Herries, he is called uncle of the eighth Lord Maxwell in a legal document 21 February 1573-74. This title he bore as husband of Agnes, suo jure Lady Herries. His descendant, the seventh Lord Herries, succeeded in 1667 to the Maxwell honours."
