"William Abernethy, seventh of Saltoun, succeeded his grandfather in 1420. He was one of the ' magnates Scotiae ' who went to meet King James I. at Durham in 1423, and in the following year he was one of the hostages for the ransom of the Scottish King, his estates being valued at an annual rental of 500 merks."
