User ID: M918. General Notes: "The Kincardineshire branch of the male line of the Melvilles survived no later than 1448, when Alexander Melville's only daughter and heiress, ELIZABETH, was married to Sir Alexander Auchinleck of Balmanno, a cadet of the family of Auchinleck in Ayrshire. Lady Auchinleck's only child was married in 1492 to Sir William Douglas of Braidwood, second eon of Archibald, Earl of Angus, well known as Bell the Cat, and by her he had the barony of Glenbervie. These were the grandfather and grandmother of Sir William Douglas, afterwards ninth Earl of Angus, from whom were descended the Dukes of Hamilton and Douglas, and many others amongst, the nobility." Alexander married. |
