"Sir John Auchinleck and his brother James married respectively Elizabeth and Giles Melville, co-heiresses of Alexander Melville of Glenbervie. James died without issue, but Sir John's grand-daughter Elizabeth married William Douglas, second son of Archibald, fifth Earl of Angus, and became ancestress of the Douglases of Glenbervie, Earls of Angus."

"James de Auchinleck, is styled brother to John de Auchinleck of Glenbervie when included in an indenture between that John, on the one part, and James de Melville, brother of the deceased John de Melville of Glenbervie, and Andrew and John Melville, his sons, on the other part, by which they resigned their claim to the lordship of Glenbervie in favour of John de Auchinleck and Sir James de Auchinleck, his father, and acknowledged themselves to be vassals of Sir James and John in return for infeftment in the lands of Ardbady and Inchmarlo, dated 31 August 1445.2[2 GD52/1043.] He m. Egedia, daughter and co-heir of Alexander Melville of Glenbervie, and on a resignation made to him by his wife, he had a charter under the Great Seal for the middle-part of the lands of Glenbervie and Barras, Kincardineshire, and those of Kemnay, in Aberdeenshire, along with an annualrent to be uplifted from the lands of Inverury on 12 February 1467.3[3 RMS 1424-1513. No. 905]
