  • Marriage (1): WEMYSS, Duncan of Rires by 1400 1 2 3

   User ID: M885.

Elizabeth married Duncan WEMYSS of Rires, son of Sir John WEMYSS of Leuchars, Kincaldrum and Rires, then of Wemyss and First WIFE?, by 1400.1 2 3 (Duncan WEMYSS of Rires was born about 1375 and died after 1438 1.)

  Marriage Notes:

"Duncan Wemyss, who between 1398 and 1400 married Elizabeth Erskine, a daughter of Thomas Erskine of that ilk, and Joanna Keith his wife. With her he received from her father and mother a grant of the lands of Perthesk or Pirchock, and Ludcairn, in the shire of Aberdeen, and in the charter of conveyance he is described as Duncan of Wemyss, son and heir of Sir John of Wemyss, knight, lord of Leuchars-Wemyss. As the charter in question was certainly granted not later than 1400, and Duncan Wemyss was then the heir of Sir John Wemyss, it is clear he was older than his brother David, who afterwards inherited the lands of Wemyss. As David in 1418, while his father and mother were still alive, describes himself as their son and apparent heir, in relation to his mother's lands, and as his elder brother Duncan was also then alive, it is evident that the family tradition referred to is substantially correct, and that Duncan Wemyss, and probably other sons of Sir John Wemyss were the children of an earlier marriage, before his union with Isabel Erskine, by whom he acquired her portion of Wemyss, which was inherited by her son David."

from Family of Wemyss

"Elizabeth (Erskine), whom it was proposed to marry to Alexander Seton, afterwards Lord of Gordon, but she was married to Duncan Wemyss of Rires. She and her spouse had from her father and mother a charter of the lands of Pirchock and Ludquharn, dated between 1398 and 1400. They had issue."

from Scots Peerage (vol 5)

"Duncan (Wemyss), who is named as heir of his father in 1400, and was provided to or inherited the lands of Reres, Leuchars-Wemyss, with Logie-Murdoch and others in Fife. He went to England in 1432 as a hostage for King James I., was still there in 1438, and probably died there. He married, between 1398 and 1400, Elizabeth Erskine, daughter of Thomas Erskine of that Ilk and Joanna Keith. He was the ancestor of the families of Wemyss of Reres, Wemyss of Pittencrieff, and Wemyss of Myrecairnie or Logie."
