Note In ScotsPeerage (vol 5), below, John Leslie is designated not third, but 'fourth Lord Lindores'. Strictly speaking, according to Family of Leslie, the 'first' Lord Lindores, Patrick of Pitcairlies "was never properly Lord Lindores, although he assumed the title. The abbey of Lindores was erected into a temporal lordship only, 31st March 1600, in favour of his son Patrick Sir Patrick the elder holding only the title of Commendator of Lindores." (page 182) However, in 1606, there was further legislation including the Commendator in its benefit and making him Lord Lindores. See the file of Sir Patrick Leslie, 1st Lord Lindores.
"John, fourth Lord Lindores, succeeded his father before 20 July 1667. On 1 August 1694 he had a grant of the house and grounds of Lindores and some of the property, all of which had been alienated by the second Lord. He was buried in Holyrood 17 January 1706, having married, first, 31 July 1669, Marion, daughter of James, second Earl of Airlie, and widow of James, Lord Coupar .... By his first wife Lord Lindores had issue one son, David, fifth Lord Lindores ..."
from Scots Peerage (vol 5)
"John, Lord Lindores, married, first, Lady Marion Ogilvie, daughter of James, second Earl of Airlie, and relict of James Elphinston, Lord Cowper. By her he had a son I. David, who succeeded him."
