"The Precept of Sasine is directed to Archibald Irvine of Whitestone, who, on 21st January 1602, granted an obligation to infeft his kinsman, Alexander Irvine, fiar of Drum, in the lands of Whitestone (Aberdeen Sasines, vol. ii.). His daughter, Christian, married William Strachan of Tillifroskie, to whose third son, William, he granted a charter of the lands of Whitestone. On 26th September 1604, Archibald Irvine became bound in 500 merks, that Strachan of Tillyfroskie would not slay salmon in forbidden time upon the waters of Dee or Don with any kind of engine (Reg. of Privy Council, vii.,p. 569). Thomas Forbes of Clova was a witness."

"Shortly afterwards, on the 27th of June (of 1640), a force of 200 with their officers plundered the Houses of Balbithan and Hedderwick (Chalmers) and Lethinty (Urquhart), and destroyed the doors and gates of Newton (Gordon); and crowned their day's exploits by seizing some anti-Covenanter ministers of the Garioch, whom they forced to march on foot to Aberdeen to prison. These were Mr. Andrew Logie of Rayne, Mr. John Cheyne of Kintore, Mr. William Leith of Kinkell, Mr. William Strachan of Daviot, and Mr. Samuel Walcar of Monkegy. The Garioch pillaging party, with their prey and prisoners, reached Aberdeen on 1st July."

February 25.

Abstracted Multures. Janet Gordoun, widow of John Leithe of Harthill, Life- rentrix of the lands of Auld Raine, Adam Abercrombie, her husband, and Sir Alexr. Abercrombie of Galcorss, knight, and Hector Abercrombie of Fetternear, as lessees under the principal Pursuers v. Mr. Wm. Straquhan, Persone of Dawiot, Mr. Wm. Straquhan, his son, there, James Gordoun in Louesk, Patrick Honnie there, John Meany there, and James Diak there.

By Contract dated 24 May, 1627, the late John Leithe had disponed Luesk to his son, John Leithe, and his wife, Jean Forbes, but under the stipulation that all the corn grown upon the lands should be ground at the Milne of Auld Raine. Mr. Wm. Straquhan, to whom Leithe the younger had wadset Luesk, became subject to this obligation, but he and his tenants had not been recognising it. Hence this decree.

The grain prices were sued and decerned for according to the 'feiris' of the respective years. Janet Gordoun's liferent Sasine, dated 13 August, 1604. Notary the late Mr. John Leithe. The title granted to the Abercrombies was dated 13 August, 1635, and registered in the Books of Council and Session 24 March, 1637. An extract of the fiars prices from the Sheriff Court Books was produced."

Registration. Mr. Thomas Gordoun in Auchleuchries, as assignee of James Gordoun, lawful son of the late Patrick Gordoun of Neithermuire, as heir of the late Patrick Gordoun, his brother german, Wm. Gordoun of Brodland, and Alexr. Gordoun of Eister Garrie, his brother german. A Bond for 1000 merks, dated at Abd., 2 June, 1626, granted by Wm. Gordoun of Brodland, as principal, and Alexr. Gordoun of Eister Garrie, his brother german, in favor of Patrick Gordoun of Neithermuire 'in name and behalff and as father tutor guyder and lawful administrator to Patrick Gordoun, his son,' was ordained to be registered. One of the witnesses to the Bond was Mr. Wm. Straquhan, Minister at Daviott."

"Act in favour of Mr William Strachan, minister of Daviot

The estates of parliament, having heard and considered the supplication given in to them by Mr William Strachan, minister at Daviot, and Mr William Strachan, his son, against John Leith of Harthill and Mr Robert Petrie, agent in Edinburgh, desiring that the subscribed minute of contract between the supplicants on the one part and the said John Leith of Harthill on the other part, dated at Harthill, 17 November 1645, whereby the lands of Lewesk were wadset by Harthill to the supplicants for and under reversion of 8,600 merks, are not only declared to be redeemable from the supplicants except by payment to them of the sum of 5,000 merks, but the supplicants are also obliged to pay yearly to Harthill and his spouse the sum of 288 merks during the non-redemption, may be declared void and null from the start, according to the act of parliament of 26 March 1647 made anent annulling bonds given to James Graham, [earl of Montrose], Alastair MacDonald and their adherents, as at more length is contained in the said supplication. Which, with the report of the committee relating thereto, being considered by the said estates of parliament, and that after citation of Harthill anent the aforesaid minute of contract whereof the aforesaid duplicate is produced by the supplicant, and concerning the cause and way of subscribing thereof, they, upon consideration thereof and of the supplication of the presbytery of Garioch, subscribed by the moderator and produced by the supplicant, find that the aforesaid minute of contract whereof the subscribed duplicate is produced falls directly under the aforesaid act of parliament of 27 March 1647 annulling bonds given to James Graham, Alastair MacDonald and their adherents, the aforesaid minute of contract being granted and subscribed by the supplicants at the time of the rebellion mentioned in the said act and when the supplicants were under the power of Harthill. Therefore the said estates of parliament ordain the aforesaid minute to be void and null from the start and in time coming with all that has followed or may follow thereupon, and declare their heirs and successors to be altogether free of the keeping and fulfilling thereof."

"William Strachan, probably brother of Andrew and Alexander S., mins. of Chapel of Garioch (error, see note); educated at Marischal College, Aberdeen; M.A. (1605); adm. before 14th April 1613; refused to take the Covenant in 1640, and was arrested by a party of its supporters; was suspended by the Synod in 1649 and had an Act of Parliament passed in his favour 26th June that year. He marr. Grizel Smith, and had issue William, a student at Marischal College 1630-8."

Fasti Ecclesiae, this William Strachan was wrongly identified. He was not the son of William Strachan, Minister of Dun in Angus, but was related to the family through marriage. 1 2

William next married Elizabeth STRACHAN, daughter of Reverend Mr Alexander STRACHAN Minister of Chapel of Garioch and Fetternear parish and Katherine STRACHAN, before 12 February 1652.3 (Elizabeth STRACHAN was born about 1626.)
