WARDLAW, Henry 7th of Wilton and 4th of Torry, Sir 1
User ID: W21. General Notes: "Henry Wardlaw of Torrie was knighted before 31 August I 503. In that year he was pronounced incapable of managing his affairs and was interdicted from alienating his lands in prejudice of John Wardlaw, his son and heir. He probably parted with his lands in Roxburghshire and Forfarshire at this time as there is no further record of them in connexion with the family of Torrie. Sir Henry's brother, John, who was his factor, had his seal and seems to have acted with a high hand, as his nephew, John Wardlaw, the heir, 'objected that he was not to be hurt' by his uncle's doings. In February 1506-7, Sir Henry Wardlaw 'being furth of Scotland,' John and William, his sons, sued John Wardlaw, his factor, for 'sustenance.' " Henry married Margaret LINDSAY, daughter of John LINDSAY Lord Lindsay of the Byres and Daughter STEWART, in 1473.1 (Margaret LINDSAY was born about 1444 and died by 1506(1597) 1.). The cause of her death was murder by her brother in law, John Wardlaw. Marriage Notes: "Sir Henry Wardlaw (VII.), Knight, of Wilton and Torrie, eldest son of Henry Wardlaw and Margaret Oliphant, had a sasine of the lands of Dalginch in Fife in 1473, the year of his marriage. In 1477 he had sasine of the lands of Blair, Byn, Lochynmurtoun, Lochgelly, and Clunane in Fife. In this same year (8 December 1477), he had a charter of confirmation from King James III. to himself and Margaret Lindesay, his wife, of the lands of Blarequhisse, Ladach, Hiltoun, Ballingry, Nevody, and the Mylntoun of Inchgall in the western part of Lochorshire in Fife, which he personally had resigned. This laird is supposed to have rebuilt Lochore Castle about this time." (pages 45 and 46) Henry next married Margaret GOURLAY.1 (Margaret GOURLAY was born about 1465.) Marriage Notes: "Sir Henry married secondly Margaret Gourlay, probably of the Kincraig family, but by her he had no issue. She is frequently referred to in deeds as 'lady of Torry.' " |
