John married Jean FLEMING, daughter of James FLEMING 4th Lord Fleming, Lord Chamberlain and Barbara HAMILTON, 4 November 1597(contract).^{1 2} (Jean FLEMING was born about 1555, died on 23 June 1609 ² and was buried in 1609 in Haddington Churchyard, East Lothian, Scotland ².)

  Marriage Notes:

"His (John Kennedy's) uncle, the Master of Glamis, in February 1590-91, proposed to marry him to the sister of the young Earl of Argyll, but this plan was hindered by the Chancellor, then John, first Lord Maitland of Thirlstane, and the Earl married, contract 4 November 1597, Jean, only daughter and heiress of James, fourth Lord Fleming, and widow of the same Chancellor, who had died 3 October 1595.She was much older than the Earl, but was wealthy. She died, it is said, 23 June 1609, aged flfty-flve, and was buried at Haddington.' She was certainly dead before 22 August 1611.' The fifth Earl of Cassillis had no issue, and was succeeded by his nephew, VIIL John, sixth Earl of Cassillis"
