POSSIBLE BAPTISMS

For various reasons it is unclear when Elizabeth Hay was born. These are two possible baptisms, though she may not have been baptized in the Church of Scotland at all.

The picture is clouded by the fact that in Edinburgh there is another prominent Hay family: James Hay of of Carriber or Carruber, among whose relatives there are some named George Hay and Andrew Hay, not to mention 'writers' ie solicitors. 4 5 6 7

Elizabeth married Joseph HOWIE of Meikle Drumgray, son of Robert HOWIE elder, of Glentore and Elizabeth GRAY, on 29 July 1717 in Airdrie or New Monkland parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 2 (Joseph HOWIE of Meikle Drumgray was born about 1690.)

"1717

Joseph Houie and Elizabeth Hay Witt John Hay of Inchnoch and James Hay in anathill"

Note: Inchnoch or Inchnok was formerly associated with the Forsyth of Dykes family, then later with the Hay and Steel families. The remains of a tower house is noted by Historic Environment Scotland. It is situated north of Glenboig and east of Mount Ellen, in the parish of New Monkland, not far from Marnock/Marnoch. The "John Hay of Inchnoch" mentioned may be the minister at New Monkland, who did not die until 1720, or possibly his son who carried the same name and title. "James Hay in Anathill" may possibly be James Hay, grandson of Andrew Hay of Inchnoch and son of George Hay in Annathill; that James Hay was a Writer to the Signet in Edinburgh and the father of the Roman Catholic Bishop George Hay who was born in 1729. This possibility should be treated with caution as the latter was, as a Jacobite, banished in 1715. Though he presumably returned, the dates of the return are not clear.< 1 2 8 9 10 11 12
