HOWIE, Robert of Ruchrig 1 2

  • Born: About 1692 3

  General Notes:

'I have a document dated 1710 executed by "me Robert Houie [of Ruchrig] only laull son and aire to ye deceast Robert Houie younger portioner of Easter Glentore ... speciall advice and consent of Robert Houie elder there my grand father and of Robert Mannuall of Murhead my uncle my curators ... In witness yrof thir presents written be me ye said Robert Houie minor" '

from Forfarian (2015) on Rootschat

Note: The Discharge and Renunciation document referred to above was produced and signed "Att Hamilton the twelveth day of December jajvij and ten years", ie on 12 December 1710. The first signing appears to have been a month earlier:

"
In witness yrof thir presents written be me ye said Robert Houie minor nou servitor to John Robertoune Sherrife Clerke of Lanerke and suscribed as followe by us the said Robert Houie minor and Curatores att Cumbernauld the tent day of November jajvij and ten yeares before these witnesses James Somervell of Glehove and Robert Thom in Easter Glentore James Shau in Ruthrey and James Curry nottar in Cumbernauld sic subscribitur R Houie Robert Houie Robert Mannuall J Sommervell witness Robert Thom witness J Currie witness. [National Archives of Scotland RS42/12/123]"

If Robert Howie was a minor in law at that date, then he was born after 13 December 1689. The document may have been drawn up as he approached his majority, or it may be, perhaps more likely, as a result of his father's death.

The same document is quoted in other family history online conversations:
"Robert Howie, son of Robert Howie younger of Glentore and grandson of Robert Howie elder of Glentore, describes himself in a document [RS42/XII.123] in 1710 as the only lawful son of Robert Howie younger. He also refers to his uncle Robert Manuel."

from Forfarian (2016) on Rootschat

"Howie, Robert, of Ruchrig, writer, Hamilton, son of Robert Howie, younger, portioner of Easter Glentore, RS42/IX.458; X.344; XI.157; XII.102, 288, 371, 372"

from Forfarian (2016) citing Index to Registers of Sasines, County of of Lanark, 1618-1720 1 4

  Research Notes:

RUCHRIG

This is likely to be Ruchcraig, more commonly now found as Roughcraig, near Airdrie, Lanarkshire. There is now a Roughcraig Street, and Roughcraig Glen can be found to the north of Airdrie, near Glenmavis. While it's clear that in the 17th and 18th centuries it was farmland, by the early to mid 19th century there was a colliery and an oil works by that name. The area is to be found on older maps between Rochsoles House to the north-west and thrushbush to the south-east. 5 6 7
