When Jane died in 1858 she was recorded as the widow of a labourer, and aged 73 years. Both of her parents were deceased.

Henry Ballantine was the informant of the death of his mother, Jane Porteous, before the registrar at Kirkland, Morton, on 25 December 1858. ⁵

Jean married Gilbert BALLANTINE, son of Thomas BONNATINE and Agnes RENWICK, on 9 December 1808 in Lochmaben parish, Dumfriesshire, Scotland.^{1 2} (Gilbert BALLANTINE was born about 1785, died on 4 May 1856 in 27 New Street, Thornhill, Dumfriesshire, Scotland ⁹ and was buried in 1856 in Penpont Churchyard, Dumfriesshire, Scotland ⁹.). The cause of his death was exhaustion over 1 month.⁵
