Gilbert's death certificate of 1856 recorded him as married and as a labouer by occupation. His recorded age at death was 69 years. Both of his parents were deceased. 9

It was Henry Ballantine, son of the deceased Gilbert Ballantine and who had been present where the death occurred, who gave notice of his father's death before the registrar at Kirkland, Morton, on 5 May 1856. 3


Gilbert married Jean POURTOUS, daughter of John PORTEOUS Weaver and Agnes McCAIG, on 9 December 1808 in Lochmaben parish, Dumfriesshire, Scotland.1 2 (Jean POURTOUS was born on 14 August 1785 in Dryfesdale parish, Dumfriesshire, Scotland 4, baptised on 21 August 1785 in Dryfesdale parish, Dumfriesshire, Scotland,4 5 died on 21 December 1858 in New Street, Thornhill, Dumfriesshire, Scotland 10 and was buried in 1858 in Penpont Churchyard, Dumfriesshire, Scotland 10.). The cause of her death was influenza for about 1 week.3
