PARENTS

Some secondary sources have Jean Halyburton as the daughter of Sir Walter Halyburton and Isobel Stewart, a not uncommon mistaking of a brother for a father. However it is clear that the dates as given for other parties in the family complex do not allow Jean to be Walter's daughter.

Jean married Henry SINCLAIR Earl of Orkney, son of Sir William SINCLAIR 4th of Roslin and Isabella of Strathearn, heiress of Caithness.1 2 (Henry SINCLAIR Earl of Orkney was born about 1345 and died in 1404 in Orkney 2.)

  Marriage Notes:

"He (Henry Sinclair) married Jean, daughter of Sir Walter Halyburton of Dirleton, and had issue"

from Scots Peerage (vol 6)

"He (Sir Walter Haliburton) was alive 1388 (see below), and had a son John, his successor, and a daughter Jean, married to Henry St. Clair, first Earl of Orkney of the St. Clair line ; in the charter of 1388 quoted below, Henry, Earl of Orkney is styled brother of Sir John Haliburton.... "

from Scots Peerage (vol 9) 1 2
