Sometime in partnership with his younger brother Clements (1825), firm being Henry & Clements Lumsden. Joint collector of County Rates for Aberdeenshire, 1826-44. Director, Aberdeen Banking Company. One of the Assessors to the Rector of Mar. Coll., 1837. Fiars Juror, 1838-50. Convener of Banffshire. D.L., Aberdeenshire and Kincardineshire. Prominent Freemason. Lieut, Royal Aberdeen Vols., 1803, Captain, Aberdeenshire Local Militia, 1808. Proprietor of Tilwhilly, and subsequently (as heir of entail) proprietor of the Auchindoir estates. "The sitter, Catherine Tower, was the third daughter of John Tower and Elizabeth Cruger. Her maternal great-grandfather had been Mayor of New York. In 1815 she married Henry Lumsden of Tilwhilly and Auchindoir in Aberdeenshire. The artist who captured her likeness, Henry Raeburn, is one of the best known Scottish portrait painters. In his lifetime the considerable demand for his work allowed him to maintain a successful career within Scotland, and he spent most of his working life in Edinburgh.
