DE SETON, Alexander, Sir 1 2 3

  • Born: About 1160
  • Marriage (1): Unknown 1
  • Died: shortly after 1246 2

   User ID: W388.

  General Notes:

"Alexander, son of Philip de Setun had a charter of confirmation of the land that was Philip his father's, viz.,
Setune and Wintune and Wincelburgh, granted at Forfar by King William the Lion ; to be held by the service of one knight ' as is shown by my charter made thereupon to his father.' This confirmation is now considered to date from about the year 1195. The name of Alexander de Seton, (sometimes styled knight), occurs frequently in record throughout the reign of King Alexander II. He made a donation to Dunfermline Abbey for the benefit of his soul before 1246,' and is said to have died shortly afterwards.
There appears to be in existence no record evidence of the devolution of his estates for many years after his time."

from Scots Peerage (vol 8)

Note: The last sentence of the excerpt above indicates that this period of Seton genealogy has been much argued over, and is seriously uncertain, so the reader or user should beware.

  Marriage Notes:

"Alexander de Seton=Jean, daughter of Walter Barclay, Chancellor to King William the Lion."

from Family of Seton

Note: Walter was Chamberlain rather than Chancellor, apparently, to the King.
