  General Notes:

In 1841 Thomas Hay was living at Maxwelton mains in the parish of Glencairn in Dumfriesshire. His age was noted as 28 years and he had been born in Scotland outside of Dumfriesshire. In the same household lived Mathew and James Fergusson, an apprentice gardener and an agricultural labourer respectively, and Margaret Ballantine, a "farmer". Margaret was recorded as 32 years of age and born in Dumfriesshire.

In 1851 the census for Dumfriesshire recorded Thomas and Margaret Hay and family living at Brae Cottage, Glencairn parish. Thomas Hay aged 7 and born in Linlithgow, was a gamekeeper. Margaret was recorded as 43 years old and born in Tynron parish Dumfriesshire. They had three daughters, Margaret Hay 6 years, Agnes Hay 5 years, Janet Hay 3 years, all born in Glencairn parish. A 43 year old lodger, William Thorburn, a carpenter, also lived in the household.

In the 1861 Dumfriesshire census gamekeeper Thomas and his wife, Margaret Hay, with their two daughters, Agnes, aged 15 years, and Janet, aged 13 years, were living at Maxwelton Cottage in the parish of Glencairn. Thomas was recorded as aged 47 years and born in Linlithgow, Margaret was 53 years and born in Tyrnron. The girls were born in Glencairn.

Thomas, a gamekeeper aged 51 years, and Margaret Hay, aged 63 years, were still living in Glencairn parish in 1871, in Maxwellton Lodge, with their daughter Margaret, aged 26 years and a housemaid by occupation. The census return name Thomas Hay's place of birth as "Durriedear, Linlithgowshire".

When Margaret Hay nee Ballantyne died in 1880, her death certificate recorded her as aged 73 years at the time of death and "married to Thomas Hay Gamekeeper". Thomas Hay, widower, who was present where his wife died, gave notice of her death before the registrar at Moniaive on 19 November 1880. 2 3 4 5 6


Thomas married Margaret BALLANTYNE, daughter of John BALLANTINE and Margaret CLARK (DNA Linked), on 21 May 1843 in Glencairn parish, Dumfriesshire, Scotland.1 (Margaret BALLANTYNE was born on 16 September 1805 in Tynron parish, Dumfriesshire, Scotland 7, baptised on 17 September 1805 in Tynron parish, Dumfriesshire, Scotland 7 and died on 13 November 1880 in Maxwelton Lodge, Glencairn parish, Dumfriesshire, Scotland 8.). The cause of her death was cerebral haemorrhage over 3 days/valvular disease of the heart and bronchitis over years.
