The 1851 UK Census for Holytown in the parish of Bothwell, Lanarkshire, recorded John and Agnes Shearer living with their six children in "Mrs Pettegrews Rows", Chapelhall. John was recorded as aged 35 years, born in Hamilton Lanarkshire, and working as a furnace keeper. His wife Agnes was 34 years old and had been born in "Stranraer, Galloway". Their children were Elizabeth (16), John (13), Isabella (8), Agnes (5), Alexander (2) and Thomas, aged 6 months. Elizabeth had been born in Hamilton. The other children were born in Bothwell parish. John, younger, was an ironwork labourer; those younger were at day school, apart from the two youngest.

In 1855 John Shearer was recorded as a furnaceman,in the marriage certificate of his daughter Elizabeth.

In 1861 John and Agnes Shearer were living at Carlisle Road, Chapelhall in Bothwell parish, Lanarkshire with five of their children. John was a blast furnace keeper, born in Hamilton. His wife Agnes had been born in Wigtownshire. The children were all born in Bothwell parish.

The 1871 UK census for Bothwell parish recorded John and Agnes Shearer living in Carlisle Road, Holytown with their sons John Alexander and Thomas. John, senior, was a labourer at an iron works. John, junior, was a blastfurnaceman. Alexander and Thomas were coal miners.

In the 1879 marriage certificate of his son John, John Shearer was recorded as a labourer in an ironworks.

John Shearer was recorded in his daughter Elizabeth's death certificate in 1895as a "furnace filler (deceased)". 4 5 6 7 8 9 12 13


John married Agnes McDEDD, daughter of Thomas McDAD and Elizabeth RENKIN, on 29 September 1833 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (Agnes McDEDD was born in 1815 in Wigtownshire, Scotland 4 9 14, baptised on 22 October 1815 in Kirkcolm parish, Wigtownshire, Scotland 2 14 and died on 22 July 1905 in 122 Dundyvan Road, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, Scotland 11 15.). The cause of her death was rodent ulcer and senile debility.
