General Notes: "Having no male issue, ((The 3rd Earl of Morton's) made an entail of his estates and honours in favour of Sir Robert Douglas of Lochleven, who had a charter of the same, 17th October 1540. Afterwards, however, he altered the destination, and a charter of the lands and earldom was granted in favour of his son-in-law, James Douglas, and the Lady Elizabeth, his wife, and the longest liver, in conjunct fee, and the heirs male to be procreated between them, the remainder to others therein mentioned, and the heirs male of their bodies respectively, which was confirmed by royal charger, 22d April 1543..... Archibald married Mary ERSKINE, daughter of John ERSKINE 6th Lord Erskine, restored Earl of Mar (18th), Regent of Scotland and Annabella MURRAY, on 13 June 1573.1 (Mary ERSKINE was born about 1558.) Marriage Notes: "Mary (Erskine), married, 13 June 1573, to Archibald, eighth Earl of Angus. Part of her tocher, which in all was 8000 merks Scots, was paid on 1 May 1573." Archibald next married Margaret LESLIE, daughter of George LESLIE 4th Earl of Rothes, Sheriff of Fife and Margaret CRICHTON.2 (Margaret LESLIE was born about 1539.) Marriage Notes: "Lady Margaret (Leslie), married to Archibald eigth Earl of Angus ..." Archibald next married Jean LYON, daughter of John LYON 8th Lord Glamis, Lord High Chancellor of Scotland and Elizabeth ABERNETHY, 29 July 1587(contract).3 (Jean LYON was born about 1571 and died between June 1607 and March 1610 5.) Marriage Notes: "She (Jean Lyon) was married, secondly, as his third wife (contract 29 July 1587), to Archibald, eighth Earl of Angus." |
