  Research Notes:

STAVERT

"Supposed to have been originally Staward, and one of that name is traditionally said to have carried the Douglas banner at Otterburn, 1388 (White, History of Otterburn, 1857, p. 131). James Stavert in Earlsyde, 1682 (Peebles CR.). General Thomas Hope Stavert of Hoscote died July, 1936."

"Stavert
James
6/6/1682
in Earlsyde
Testament Dative and Inventory
Peebles Commissary Court
CC18/3/1"

This derivation may link it with Stewart or Suart, Steuart, which itself is an occupational surname. In Gaelic the form is Stillbhard, which itself may be linked to the Old English word "stigweard," a compound of "stig," or "household," and "weard," or "guardian."
A variation may be Stabert, a form which appears in the records of baptisms of Christian's children. Church registers in the GRO also show a variation Stevart, for example in 1690s marriages in Peebles. W, B, V are often interchanged to produce written variations in certain names, according to local pronunciatione. 1 2 3 4 5

Christian married Thomas NISBIT Garner at Winkston about 1685. (Thomas NISBIT Garner at Winkston was born about 1660.)
