There is some debate among authorities about whether John is 9th or 8th of Pitsligo, depending on whether his ancestor William is admitted as 7th.

John married Christian OGILVY, daughter of Sir Walter OGILVY Lord Ogilvy of Deskford and Agnes ELPHINSTONE, in 1597.^{1 2} (Christian OGILVY was born about 1574.)
