  General Notes:

The 1901 census for Uphall in West Lothian recorded John Steven as head of the household living at no 15 Roman Camp. As well as himself and his wife Eleanor, there were seven others living in the household: sons and daughter of the couple plus 1 boarder, Robert Saunders, aged 24 yearsborn in Govan, and a labourer in the oil works. John Steven himself was recorded as 47 years of age and had been born in Forfar. He was a retortman in the oil works.

In the death certificate of his wife in 1927 John Steven was recorded as a general labourer. 2 6


John married Eleanor HAIMES, daughter of George HAIMES and Jane DEANS, in 1878 in Haddington, East Lothian, Scotland.1 (Eleanor HAIMES was born on 21 January 1856 in Hawick, Roxburghshire, Scotland 4 and died 27 January 1927 at 6.00 am in 5 Roman Camp, Uphall, West Lothian, Scotland 2.). The cause of her death was carcinoma of the uterus.
