In 1861 the census recorded this family as split up. Agnes was living with her five children in 34 Mill Lane, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, and although the entry includes a head of the house -with no first name- who is male, Hugh in fact was living as a lodger in Beith, Ayrshire. The Mill Lane entry is :
