  General Notes:

The 1851 census for Riccarton recorded Hugh and Agness Shimmons with two small children, living at Bridgehouse Toll House. Hugh was 28 years old according to the census and worked as an agricultural labourer. His birthplace was Ireland. His wife Agness was born in Symington Ayrshire and was 26 years old.

The 1861 census recorded Hugh twice: once simply as head of the household where his wife and children lived in Kilmarnock at 34 Mill Lane, where no first name is noted for him but his age, employment and birthplace are noted; and seconly as a lodger in Beith, Ayrshire, where presumably he had gone to work. In Beith he lived as a lodger in the household of Jane Blackwood; the entry recorded him as 39 years old and born in Ireland, and working as a limestone quarrier.

In 1871 the census recorded the family as continuing to live at 34 Mill Lane Kilmarnock. There were six children living there with their parents. Hugh was a railway labourer. The two younger children were recorded as David, aged 7 years, and Margaret, aged 3 years. Janet was not recorded living with the family. 3 4 5 6
