SPECULATIVE PLACING - CAUTION

The Family Records of the Bruces and the Cumyns states that Lucretia Gordon was the second wife of George Cumyn:

"Lucretia Gordon. Her monument exists in St Mary's aisle, Elgin Cathedral :

'Here lies the body of Lucretia Gordon, spouse of George Cumyn, some time Provost of Elgin,' who died in September 1668. The arms are those of the Gordons of Kinnedar.' "

Placing her among the Gordons of Kinneddar is not improbable. Alexander Gordon of Salterhill, the grandson of the John Gordon who is suggested here as Lucretia's father, had a daughter baptised in Drainie parish in 1671 named Lucretia. Assuming this Lucretia died in 1668, the child might have been named for this woman.

No baptismal record has ben found for this Lucretia, and, depending on her age, it is possible she may be John's granddaughter rather than his daughter. Since no child of the second marriage of George Cuming is mentioned, it may be Lucretia was, by the late 1650s, beyond childbearing age. 1

Lucretia married George CUMMING of Lochtervandich, Merchant, Provost of Elgin, son of George CUMMING of Lochtervandich and Margaret GRANT.1 (George CUMMING of Lochtervandich, Merchant, Provost of Elgin was born about 1600 and died on 20 September 1689 1 2.)

  Marriage Notes:

"Marjorie Leslie died in September 1656, and George Cumyn married, secondly, Lucretia Gordon. Her monument exists in St Mary's aisle, Elgin Cathedral :

'Here lies the body of Lucretia Gordon, spouse of George Cumyn, some time Provost of Elgin,' who died in September 1668. The arms are those of the Gordons of Kinnedar."
