"Marjorie Geddes produced an exoneration, under the hand of the Sheriff Clerk, and dated- 30 April, 1653, of her as executrix of the deceased Alexander Gordon of Aikenhead. Part of this exoneration remains, and shows that Alexander Gordon rented Myresvid. Readhall, Salterhill, and Little Dranie; that at his death he was due to umquhill James Gordon of Mostowie £333 6s. 8d by bond dated 12 Nov. 1635, upon quhilk John Gordone, merchant burges of Elgin, eldest lawfull sone and air to said umquhill James Gordon obtainit decreet..."

PARENTAGE - CAUTION
This placing of James Gordon is entirely speculative. His (speculated) first cousin was Katherine Gordon, married to James Innes of Drainie. They had a link to Mosstowie in the middle of the 16th century, suggesting a family connection to that area of land, and the possibility that this family might be where James Gordon 'of Mosstowie', otherwise apparently rootless, might have belonged.
""I find that a tack of the teind sheaves was granted by Bishop Patrick Hepburn, with consent of the canons, to James Innes of Drainie, and Katherine Gordon, his spouse, for nineteen years, paying yearly fourteen bolls of victual, dated at Spynie and Elgin, 2d June, 1572."
