from Births and Baptisms

"According to the Cuming gravestone in Dallas, Isobel died in 1823, aged 90. This suggests a birth in 1732/3.

Isobel Leslie, daughter of William Leslie of Bannageith and Margaret Gellie, was born at Burncrooks and baptised in Rothes on 12 August 1730. It was her brother Alexander (b 1724) who was the father of the Rev William.

If the stone quoted by Shaw, Gordon Jervise and Co is correct in saying that Isobel Leslie or Cuming was a member of the Balnageith family (and I see no reason to doubt it), then I think it likely that she was this one, daughter of William Leslie and Margaret Gellie.

The Leslie who sold Balnageith was Archibald Leslie (1784-1851), second son of Rev William and the only one of his four sons to survive him."

Isobell married Peter CUMING 4th of Craigmill, son of William CUMING 2nd of Craigmill, Factor to Alexander Cumming of Sluie and Jean CUMING.1 2 (Peter CUMING 4th of Craigmill was baptised on 8 January 1726 in Edenhkillie parish, Moray, Scotland,3 died on 14 April 1811 in Blackhills, Moray, Scotland 2 4 and was buried in 1811 in Churchyard of Dallas parish, Moray, Scotland 2 4.)

  Marriage Notes:

" Patrick Cuming of Ardcanny, born circa 1724, died 1811. [European Magazine, 1811: 14 April, at Blackhills, county of Moray, Patrick Cuming, Esq. aged 85; and gravestone 'Sacred to the memory of Peter Cuming of Craigmill, Esquire, who died at Blackhills on the 14th April, 1811, aged eighty-five years' show that Patrick and Peter are the same person.] He married Isobel Leslie, sister of Rev William Leslie of Balnageith, and their son, Lachlan Cuming, went to Demerara."

from Cuming of Craigmill

"EPITAPHS IN THE CHURCHYARD OF DALLAS.

Sacred to the memory of Peter Cuming of Craigmill, Esquire, who died at Blackhills on the 14th April, 1811, aged eighty-five years ; and Mrs. Isobel Leslie of Balnageith, his spouse, who died at Blackhills on the 30th November, 1823, aged ninety years.

Mrs. Cuming's ancestors, who acquired the property of Balnageith, near Forres, about the end of the 17th century, were a branch of the noble family of Rothes. The Rev. Mr. Leslie, minister of St. Andrews-Lhanbryde, who also .attained to the age of 90, was the father (see Note below) of Mrs. Cuming and other children, one of whom, a son, sold Balnageith about the year 1849."

from History of Moray

Note:

This is an error. William, the "
Rev. Mr. Leslie, minister of St. Andrews-Lhanbryde" was the nephew of Mrs Cuming, not her father. He was the son of her brother Alexander. 1 2
