This child was the second to be called William in this family.

In the 1861 census for the parish of Methlick, William Hardie was the youngest of the children of William and Mary Hardie listed in the entry. His birthplace was recorded as Methlick, Aberdeenshire, and his age as 4 years.

The 1871 census for Methlick, Aberdeenshire, found William and Mary Hardy and some of their family, still living and working at Auchencrieve. With them lived their daughter Eliza, aged 23 years, their son, William, aged 15 years, and their grandson, Charles Mackay, aged 6 years. William Hardy was recorded as a farm servant and had been born in Methlick.

In 1881, William Hardie was recorded as 24 years of age and born in Methlick. No occupation was noted for him.

William Hardie, son of the deceased man, gave notice of William Hardie senior's death before the registrar, James Stephon, at Methlick on 4 June 1884.

The 1991 census for Methlick, Aberdeenshire, found William Hardie senior no longer there. His son, William, was now the farmer and head of the household of eight at Auchencrieve: William and his wife Isabella, their four children, William's mother Mary Strachan Hardie, and a general servant, Isabella Henderson. William's birthplace was noted as Methlick, and his age as 33 years.

In the census of 1901 Mary Strachen was living at Auchencruive, now the household of her son William and his family:
William Hardie 43
Isabella Hardie 39
John Hardie 14
Bella Hardie 12
Maggie Hardie 11
Fredrick Hardie 9
Annie Hardie 3
Mary Hardie 92

In his son's marriage certificate of 1909 William was recorded as being a farmer by occupation. 1

William married Isabella BROWN in 1884 in Methlick parish, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. (Isabella BROWN was born in 1862 in Methlick parish, Aberdeenshire, Scotland 1 4 and died in 1927 in Methlick parish, Aberdeenshire, Scotland 3.)
