"Sir Robert Douglass, third son of John Douglass and Mary Young,succeeded to Tilwhilly, and was served heir in 1647 to his father and two elder brothers. He espoused the Royal cause so warmly that his whole estate was sacrificed to advance it. Tilwhilly was for some time lost to the family, and Strickathrow passed away from them altogether in 1650, when it was sold to a family of the name of Turnbull. Sir Robert's name occurs in 1646 in the will of John Kirkpatrick, younger, of Closeburn, where it is said that, acting as Lieut.-Col. to Sir John Brown, of Fordel, Governor of Carlisle, 'lie and his complices plundered and took away from the place of Closeburn whatever was anyways transportable.' "
