William Cook was a coachman in 1865 as recorded in the birth certificate of his daughter Catherine.

The 1871 census for Calton, Glasgow, recorded William Cook, aged 35 years, as head of a household of four people living at 14 King Street: himself, his wife Mary Ann Cook, and their children Catherine and William, aged 5 years and aged 6 months respectively. William was a cab driver who had been born in England. Mary Ann was recorded as aged 25 years and born in Ireland, and both of the children had been born in Glasgow.

William Cook, a cab driver, gave notice of his son Walter's birth before the registrar at Glasgow on 20 August 1875, signing his name. His marriage to Mary Ann Dunn was noted as having taken place "1864 April 26th Glasgow (Bridgeton District)".

At the time of his daughter Catherine's marriage in 1884 William Cook was a stableman.

William Cook was a tanner's labourer, according to the marriage certificate of his son Patrick in 1900.

In 1901 the census recorded William and Mary A Cook living at 63 Waterloo Street Glasgow with their sons Patrick and his wife Catherine, and Thomas. William was recorded as a labourer aged 67 years, born in England, and his wife was a weaver aged 54 years, born in Ireland. Patrick was 28 years old and worked as a moulder, and his wife was 21 years old and worked as a confectioner. Thomas was a moulder too, aged 19 years. The younger generation were all Glasgow-born.

A "William Cook" aged 22 years, a soldier of the rank of Private, born in London Middlesex, England, is listed as living in Anglesea Barrack, Portsea, Hampshire, in the 1861 census for England. he is recorded as unmarried. This may or may not be the same man. 9 10


William married Mary Ann DUNN, daughter of Patrick DUNN and Ann SHARKET, on 26 April 1864 in St Mary's Chapel, Glasgow, Scotland.1 (Mary Ann DUNN was born about 1846 in Ireland 1 4 6 and died after 23 November 1900.)


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage took place after banns according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The priest who married the couple was John McGinnis and the witnesses were Peter Quinlan and Mary Murray, both of whom made their X mark.

William Cook, a widower, was a soldier in the 41st Regiment. He was aged 29 years and resident in Glasgow. He made his X mark.

Mary Ann Dunn, who also signed with an X mark, was 17 years old and a single woman. Her address was noted as 3 Armour Street, and she worked as a power loom weaver. Her father was deceased.

The marriage was registered at Glasgow on 30 April 1864. 1
