"The whole of Bailie Lauder's God-fearing family were staunch Covenanters, having ' subscrybit the Covenant at Edinburgh ' ; and during the Parliamentary wars both the ministers, Mr. John and Mr. Robert Lauder, were separately ordered to join the Scottish army, then encamped at Durham. The elder brother, minister of Tyninghame, was appointed chaplain to the East Lothian Regiment, commanded by the Laird of Wauchton, a Hepburn, whose son was lieutenant-colonel. [....] Mr. John Lauder marched with the soldiers from place to place, camping out with them, sleeping and preaching in the fields"

"John Lauder, son of John L., bailie of Tynninghame (Reg. of Deeds, 1613 cclxviii., 275), and Alison Caldclaith [Caldcleuch] ; educated at Univ. of Edin burgh; M.A. (27th July 1609); was a member of Assembly 1638 ; died 29th April 1662, aged about 73. He marr. 7th Feb. 1630, Elizabeth Haitlie of Lambden, who died 5th Nov. 1639, after the birth of her son James, and had issue John, chaplain to the Earl of Lothian s Regt. in England, min. of West Calder, born 20th Jan. 1631 ; Alexander, born 23rd May 1633, died before 20th May 1663; Agnes, died 16th July 1636 ; James, born 3rd Nov. 1639. "These brother ministers (Messrs John and Robert Lauder) were the sons of the Bailie of Tyninghame, Mr. John Lauder, of the elder branch of the family, who died in 1621, about six years after his son John was nominated to the church at Tyninghame. Their widowed mother lived at Haddington, and Mistress Jean Lauder, one of the sisters of this large and united family, kept her brother's house at Tyninghame Manse until she was married, on the 19th February 1629, to Mr. George Forrest, in consequence of which, the following year, Mr. John, the minister, took unto himself a wife. On Sunday, 7th February 1630, he was married to Elizabeth Haitlie at Whittinghame, the bride taking possession of her new home on the Friday after. [....]
"One of the saddest and most pathetic entries in that thirty years' record is that which tells of a death and baptism on the same day at the manse : ' Upon the 5th day of November, being Tysday, 1639 yeirs, about 7 hours in the morning, Elizabeth Haitlie, spouse to Maister John Lauder, minister at Tyninghame, departit this lyfe. The said day ane sonne bapteisit to Maister John Lauder, minister, lawfullie named James. Bapteisit be Maister Robert Lauder, minister at Whitekirk.' Mr. Alexander Lauder and Robert Lauder, portionar of Tyninghame, witnessing.
At the fall of the next year Mr. John Lauder lost his mother, Alison Caldclaithe ; but we hear no word of a second marriage."
