The 1881 census for Stow, Midlothian, recorded a William Nisbet, born in Innerleithen, Peebleshire living at the Railwaygate House, New Edinburgh Road in Stow. William was aged 60 and married. He was the railway gate keeper. With him lived a wife, Jane Nisbet, aged 50 years.

In the death certificate of William Nisbet at Stow in 1888 it was recorded that he was a railway gatekeeper and was married to Jane Clephan.

The 1891 census recorded Jane C. Nisbet living at Crookston Railway Crossing in the parish of Stow, Midlothian. She was a widow recorded as 68 years of age. Her birth place was South Leith, Midlothian. She was employed as a railway gate keeper.

Jane Nisbet's death certificate recorded her as the widow of William Nisbet ploughman. Her recorded age at death was 69 years. Both of her parents were by then deceased. 1 2 3 4 5

The cause of death was certified by Alexander Bannatyne M D.

George R. Hutton, House Governor, gave notice of Jane's death before the registrar, Walter J. Jones, at Dalkeith on 25 March 1898. 1


Jane married William NISBET, son of Thomas NISBET (DNA Linked) and Helen GOVENLOCK (DNA Linked). (William NISBET was born in 1819 in Innerleithen, Peebleshire, Scotland 6 7 and died 9 July 1888 at 0.45 pm in Crookston Crossing, Stow, Midlothian, Scotland 3.). The cause of his death was inflammation of the bowels over 1 month.1


  Marriage Notes:

No record of marriage has as yet been found for this couple. It may have been an irregular marriage, or a non conformist one.
