William married Margaret IRVINE, daughter of Alexander IRVINE younger, of Lonmay and Elizabeth OGILVY.1 (Margaret IRVINE was born about 1539.)

  Marriage Notes:

" ... (9) Margaret, married to Cheyne of Arnage."

from The Irvines of Drum 1

William next married Daughter FORBES, daughter of Robert FORBES 5th of Echt and Bessie FORBES 'Lady of Echt'.2 (Daughter FORBES was born about 1541.)

  Marriage Notes:

"Robert (Forbes, 5th of Echt), married Elizabeth, daughter of John Forbes of Brux, by whom he had seven sons and one daughter [....]

The daughter married William Cheyne of Arnage."

from House of Forbes 2

William next married Unknown PARTNER(S). (Unknown PARTNER(S) was born about 1570.)

  Marriage Notes:

This partner of William Cheyne is somewhat speculative.

Although Bessie Forbes, married to Robert Forbes of Echt, may well have had a daughter who married as his second wife William Cheyne of Arnage, it is difficult to see how Marjory Cheyne, for example, could have been the daughter of that couple.

House of Forbes does state that a daughter of Robert Forbes of Echt married William Cheyne of Arnage, shown on this site as his second wife, but says nothing about them having any children.

The dating for the marriage and childbearing of Marie Cheyne could well fit her being a daughter of the aforementioned marriage. On the Cheyne Family website, however, both Marie and Marjorie are shown in fact as children of a third wife or partner. [The source used on the Cheyne website for this scenario is Lieut. Colonel Archibald Ythan Cheyne's The Cheyne Family in Scotland, which has not been consulted as yet by this researcher.]

The suggestions noted for their birth dates on the Cheyne website are 1580 for Marie and 1600 for Marjorie, which itself displays the notable differential in their ages. So, there could even be two, rather than one, 'unknown partners'. Or indeed, there may be another scenario altogether that is undocumented and being missed. 2 4
