Note:

It is uncertain what the maiden surname of the first wife of James Forbes was, if indeed that surname was not Forbes. No record of marriage been found for the pair. In English practice it is normal for the married surname of the mother to be noted in baptisms, or only her given name, so this baptism record suggests that the couple were married before their daughter Charlotte's birth in 1794. ¹

James next married Sarah RICHARDSON on 24 September 1799 in Edinburgh parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.² (Sarah RICHARDSON was born about 1782,⁸ died in 1831 ⁸ and was buried on 19 February 1831 in All Saints parish, Hutton, Essex, England ⁸.)
