STEWART, John Professor of Mathematics at Marischal College
(About 1708-1766) |
STEWART, John Professor of Mathematics at Marischal College 1User ID: A464. General Notes: "Maclaurin's successor in the Chair of Mathematics at the Marischal College, Aberdeen, was John Stewart, whose tenure lasted till 1766, a period of nearly forty years. Stewart had graduated in 1726 so that his promotion came to him early in life. Of his general character and work I can find little information; he was a son of a provost of Aberdeen, and seems to have been known among the students by the nickname 'John Triangles.' His death is recorded in the Scots Magazine, vol. 28, p. 167, and the circumstances of it are rather painful as his wife and eldest daughter died in the same week and, in the words of the notice, 'the three corpses were carried to the grave together.' " John married Jean GORDON.1 (Jean GORDON was born about 1710 and died in 1766 2.) Marriage Notes: "Likewise Robert Stewart son to Alexander of the ancient family of the Stewarts of Bonkle married to Anne daughter of the said John Gordon who lies interred at Fetteresso. He was thrice Provost of the town and Lieutenant and Sheriff of the county of Aberdeen and discharged these and other offices with fidelity and having lived in the steady practice of piety and virtue he resigned his soul to God March 10 1749 in the 79th year of his age Also his son Mr John Stewart, Professor of Mathematics in the Marischal College...He died March 13th 1766 in the 58th year of his age and deeply regretted was carried to his grave together with Margaret his eldest daughter who died the same day: and Jean Gordon his wife who March 11 in the 47 year of her age..."
