"He (John Forbes) married Anna, daughter of Leslie of Lindores, and relict of George Leslie of Leslie. By means of her jointure and purchasing up the debts on the estate, Mr. Forbes obtained possession of the lands of Leslie. The Forbeses rebuilt the castle of Leslie, and obtained charters of that and other lands, as united in the barony of Forbes-Leslie. This place of Leslie in Aberdeenshire, in the parish of Leslie, was the original seat of the Leslies, and gave the name to the Flemish family from whom they are all descended. This John Forbes of Leslie married secondly Margaret Skene, daughter of Skene of Skene."

"Jane (Leslie), erroneously said to have married, first, George Leslie, eighth baron of that Ilk in the Garioch, and after his death, to have married, secondly, John Forbes, second son of Forbes of Monymusk, who paid the debts due on the estate of Leslie, and obtained possession of the barony, whence he assumed the style of John Forbes, Baron of Leslie, in 1620. It seems that John Forbes of Leslie was the first and only husband of Jane Leslie."

Note:

In Family Tree No 7, House of Forbes notes John Forbes as marrying Catherine Henderson Leslie, widow, 8th Laird George Leslie. This is clearly what the above quotation is referring to. Elsewhere it quotes from Laurus Leslaeana (1692) where it was stated that John Forbes married the widow of George Leslie.
