"Buchanan gives another reason for Andrew's preference. He states that the King of France, in consideration of getting the interest of the Hamiltons to favour the union of his son Francis, Dauphin of France, with Mary Queen of Scots, conferred many favours on them and their relations, and particularly, he got reinstated the younger son of George, Earl of Rothes, Andrew, in his father's estate ; Andrew being allied to the Hamiltons, having married Grizel Hamilton, daughter of Sir James Hamilton of Finnart and Avandale, natural son of James, first Earl of Arran."
